What do we know about how plants grow?

Q of D: What do we know about seed germination, seedling growth, and plant growth needs?

Obj. Students will investigate the growth stages of a plant and design an inquiry-based investigation into the initial stages of plant growth.

Activities:

1.) View images of plants with large and interesting fruits.

2.) Select several different types of plant seedlings and transfer to small soil pots.

3.) Prepare questions and notes for an inquiry investigation.

Materials:

cucumber seedlings
broccoli seedlings
potting soil
styrofoam cups
aluminum
'growth factors' chart on multiscience.blogspot.com

Questions:

1. Make a list of questions with your partner that you will need to answer to raise your plant properly.

2. Use the 'growth factors' chart to help identify key questions but do not restrict your questions to the entries given there.

3. Diagram Fig. 7.17 and 7.18 in your science notebook.

4. Review ALL answers to Reflect and Connect p. 353 for your quiz tomorrow.
