Are there patterns in how our traits are inherited?

Stop and Think

Which different alleles were present in the 'Designer Dragons' activity? As a class, we identified the following allele symbols: W, H, and F which stood for 'winged' vs. 'non-winged' phenotype, 'horned' vs. 'non-horned' phenotype, and 'fire-breathing vs. 'non-fire breathing phenotype'? What other alleles did you find?

Look over the notes from your research table. How did you know that you would be able to predict what phenotype would be present in the offspring?

Were you able to create, or "design" the type of dragon you wanted? Why or why not?

How do the major events of meiosis lead to a reduced amount of genetic information in gametes? Include in your answer how many gametes are produced by a single parent and explain why the process of meiosis results in this number of gametes. You can use your notes from meiosis dragons to write about the example.

Use Fig. 7.16 and 7.17 to create a sketch of meiosis in your notebook. Make sure to use color or patterns to distinguish the chromosome that came from the mother and the chromosome that came from the father.

Use p. 370-371 to make a Punnett Square for tall and short pea plants in your notebook.
